SHIPWRECKS OF FLORIDA

NOTE: There are many shipwrecks/artificial reefs around the coast of Florida and there are more that lie in 50 feet of water or less which we do not list. Most of the shipwrecks that we list are in 50 feet or more, except for the galleons that we list out of historical interest.

Unlike many other parts of the world many of the shipwrecks around Florida are not naturally occurring, but have been sunk intentionally to form artificial reefs for marine habitats. I suspect there are many more unknown shipwrecks in the Gulf of Mexico yet to be located. This is primarily due to the depth of water to be found here.

We do not list reef structures made from concrete culverts etc. We do list some Railway Boxcars, Boat Molds & Railway Boxcar Reefs. The list below has been formed from as many as 20 different sources, most ( nearly all ) of which do not specify the format by which the location was made ( Are they ED50, WGS84 , OSGB36 etc.?) We list the acknowledgements at the bottom of the list. It is also possible that some of the locations may prove to be inaccurate. We cannot be held responsible for any errors which may be listed, but would be grateful to be informed.

There are many different coordinate systems in use. I have explained these to address the three most commonly encountered.

DMS (Degrees Minutes Seconds) - This is the most popular coordinate system. Remember that there are 360 degrees, but you can only go up to 90 degrees north or south latitude, or just short of 180 degrees east or west longitude. At the equator a degree of longitude is over 69 miles wide, so smaller divisions are required for depicting points accurately. This system is best remembered like what is used on a clock. Think of a degree as an hour. Each degree is broken up into 60 minutes, each minute is broken up into 60 seconds. A degree = 69.1722 miles, a minute = 1.1528 miles and a second = 101.45 feet. For mariners the DMS may be an advantage as one minute corresponds (reasonably closely) to one nautical mile.

DD.MM (Degree Decimal Minutes) - This coordinate system is becoming more and more visible as it is becoming the standard many governments have set between themselves for handling coordinate data. It also seems to be used by at least some GPS receiver manufacturers for handling data within their units.

DD.DD (Decimal Degrees) - Decimal degrees simply refers to angular measurements being expressed in decimal terms. For example, one and a half degrees would be expressed as 1.5 degrees. Using the degrees, minutes, and seconds notation, one and a half degrees would be expressed as 1 30' 00". These are simply two different ways of expressing the same value. Decimal degree have a significant advantage over DMS, as you can calculate with them much easier.

I will in the future rectify that all locations are listed as WSG84 and this will be indicated on the chart below. Please note the project is ongoing. During 2008 and onwards "ELECTRIC BLUE 111" will be surveying many of the positions on the west coast of Florida using a magnetometer and side scan sonar.

ALEXANDERS WRECK - Amesbury USS (Key West)
USS Amesbury a Buckley Class Destroyer of 306 ft in length. Lies in 25 ft of water. Sank whilst under tow. Was a decommissioned U.S. Navy ship being towed by Alexander Marine Salvage off Key West to be sunk as an artificial reef when she grounded. Before she could be refloated a storm broke up her hull. Locally known as Alexander’s Wreck.

ALLIGATOR USS - Schooner (Keyes)
USS Alligator was a 12 cannon schooner. Ran aground in 1822 and was exploded by the crew to keep it from pirates. A mooring buoy close to the lighthouse in about 10 ft of water marks the ballast pile and scattered artifacts from the wreck. Wk lies in 40 ft of water.

Antonio Ensenat was a 200 ton motor assisted steel schooner. Lies in 60 ft of water. Carrying a cargo of Cuban Rum when in collision in Oct 1943 with the freighter Charta.

AMAZONE - (Ft. Pierce)
Amazone was a 255' long Dutch freighter of 1294 tons built in 1922 by Meyer & Co's Scheepsbouw Mij NV, Zaltbommel. On May 6th 1942 when she was on route from Curacao to New York with a cargo of coffee and oil when she was torpedoed by U-333. Lies in 90 ft.

ANDE - (Palm Beach County)
Ande was a 293 ft vessel and was deployed on the 24th Nov 1996 in 185 ft of water. Named after Ande Monofilament Fishing Line the sponsors of the Wk. Previously called JED Carrier.

Was a source of major treasure recoveries when initially salvaged in the early 1970's. Part of the 1733 treasure fleet.

ARABY MAID - Steel Barque (Dry Tortugas)
Araby Maid was a 863 ton and a 195 ft steel three Masted Schooner Barque built in in 1868. She lies 32 miles west of the Dry Tortugas in 204 ft of water. Sank after a collision in 1903.

ATLAS - Tug
Atlas was a 85 ft steel tug that was sunk in 73 ft of water in 1997. A second tug the MOONLIGHTER sits some 300 ft away.

Built in 1943 Audrey was a large tug of 2640 ton used as a 247 ft Clam Shell dredge. Lies in 115 ft of water and rises 68 ft off the sea bed.

Baja California was a 257 ft Norwegian 1,648 ton freighter built in 1914 and carrying war materials when torpedoed by U-84. She was on route from New Orleans for Guatemala when sunk. Lies in 115 ft.

BAYRONTO - British Freighter (Charlotte County)
BayRonto was British freighter of 6045 tons built in 1905 by Armstrong Whitworth & Co. in Newcastle. Formerly called Tronto but was renamed when sold in 1916 to Bay S.S. Co. The Bay S.S. Co. was a company formed by the French Government to operate British ships which it had purchased and due to wartime restrictions had to remain under British Flag. Dimensions: 400'x 52', and powered by a 495 nhp triple expansion engine. Overcome by heavy seas on the 13th Sept 1919. Lies in 110 ft of water.

BENJAMIN H. GRIERSON - Liberty Ship (Panama City)
Benjamin H. Grierson was a Liberty Ship built in 1943 by the Oregon Ship Building Corporation in Portland, Oregon. Dimensions: 441'x 57' and was 7,716 gross tons. On Nov 28th 1949, she was laid up in the Mobile Reserve Fleet in the Tensaw River near Mobile, Alabama. On Sept 29th 1977, the Florida Department of Natural Resources sank the vessel as an artificial reef. Commonly called the Liberty Ship lies in 75 ft of water.

U.S.C.G. BLACKTHORN - Coastguard Cutter (Tampa)
U.S. Coast Guard cutter Blackthorn, was built at Marine Iron & Shipbuilding Corp. Duluth, Minnesota, on May 21, 1943. Dimensions:180'x 37' and powered by a single screw. In January of 1980, the Blackthorn was in a collision with the tanker Capricorn at the mouth of Tampa Bay in the channel leading to the Skyway Bridge. A total of 23 of the Blackthorn's Coast Guard crew were killed in the accident. The Blackthorn's damaged hull recovered and eventually was towed into 80 ft of water and sunk on January 28th 1980 as Pinellas County Artificial Reef # 2.

BRASS WRECK- Schooner (Pensacola)
This unidentified wooden hulled wreck is thought to be that of a schooner. Located off Pensacola she received her name from divers who recovered quite a few brass artifacts from her. Thought to be from the late 1800's and is approximately 250 ft in length. Lies in 90 ft. The Brass Wreck is also known as the Anchor Wreck and maybe the BRIDE OF LORNE which was 1,324 tons and sank with a cargo of timber.

This 258 ft ship was sunk on December 14th 2001 in 60 ft of water. This Dutch built ship was seized by the Customs after it was found to be carrying cocaine. 26.28.730N 80.02.228W

CAYMAN SALVAGE MASTER
The Cayman Salvage Master was launched as the Lt. Col. Ellery W. Niles, a 163' long US Army minelayer built by Pusey & Jones of Wilmington, Delaware in 1937. A twin screw, diesel electric powered vessel later converted in 1965 as the Research Vessel (R/V) F.V. Hunt of Marine Acoustical Services, Inc. (later called TRACOR) of Miami, Florida, named for Dr. Frederick V. Hunt, an acoustical researcher. Lies in 86 ft of water.

CELTIC CRUSADER - (Palm Beach County)
The Celtic Crusader is a 265-foot general cargo ship that was built in the Netherlands in 1970. Its name was changed to Supremity and later to Korimu. Sunk as an artificial reef on the 16th March 2007. Lies in 277 ft. 26.47.670N 79.59.170W

CEMENT BARGE (Martin County)

Chickasaw was a steel hulled tug boat built in Pensacola, Florida, in 1908. Dimensions: 107 feet long, 20 foot beam. The Chickasaw was sold at an auction after World War II and purchased by Sherman Towing Company of Panama City. Renamed Sherman VI and sank at her dock in the late 1970's. Was raised and towed offshore to be sunk as a deep water fish haven, but the pumps that were being used to keep her afloat gave out, and the tug went down in shallower water than was originally planned. On Feb 26th 1947 she was commissioned into the reserves and in Jan of 1989, she was committed to the Navy Experimental Dive Unit for use as an explosive training project. EDWARD LUCKENBACH
The Edward Luckenbach was built in 1916 by the Fore River Ship Building Company of Quincy, Massachusetts. Dimensions: 437'x57'. The Luckenbach was owned by the Luckenbach Steamship Company of New York. On July 2, 1942, the Edward Luckenbach when on route from Jamaica to New Orleans carrying a mixed cargo of tungsten ore, lumber, and mail. The cargo of 10,000 tons of tungsten was valued at $1.5 million. She hit two allied mines and sank. One crew member died in the initial explosion while the remaining 41 crew and 12 U.S. Naval Armed Guards survived the incident. The Luckenbach was salvaged after the sinking to recover the tungsten which was reportedly 1/6 of the worlds supply. Afterwards, the wreck was wire-dragged as a hazard to navigation. The wreck now sits in 65' of water and is scattered over a wide area

USS BENJAMIN H. GRIERSON - Liberty Ship (Panama)
The Benjamin H. Grierson is one of many Liberty Ships that were quickly built around the U.S. during World War II. The Grierson was built in 1943 by the Oregon Ship Building Corporation in Portland, Oregon. Many Liberty Ships were named for officers of the Civil War. Benjamin H Grierson served as a colonel in the Union Army. After the war he organized the 10th cavalry regiment of white and black soldiers, known as the Buffalo Soldiers. Grierson?s career in the U.S. Army is featured in the TNT documentary, "Buffalo Soldiers".

In November, 1949, the ship was laid up in the Mobile Reserve Fleet near Mobile, Alabama. She was eventually acquired by the Florida Department of Natural Resources and deployed as an artificial reef on September 29, 1977. The Grierson (often called just Liberty Ship by locals) lies at a depth of 77 feet. The ship is 441-feet in length with a 57-foot beam. She rises 20 feet off the bottom. This American Steam tanker was 430 ft in length and 6949 tons and was built in 1921 by Sun Shipbuilding Co, Chester, Pennsylvania, USA. When on route from Houston to Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania carrying a cargo of 77,444 barrels of crude and lubrication oil when she was sunk by U-507 in position 25.30N 83.45W. Two days later the burning hulk was sent to the bottom by the USS Coral as she was a danger to shipping. Sinking position given as 24.57N 84.10W in deep water. LEROY - Cutter (Panama City)
The Leroy was built by Atlantic Iron Works in Boston, Massachusetts. She was laid down on June 18, 1874, and was originally commissioned as the Revenue Cutter Samuel Dexter. Dimensions: 143.6' x 23' and displaced 209 gross tons. Powered by a 400 hp compound engine. Samuel Dexter was sold on July 18, 1908, to Aiken Tugboat Company of Pensacola and renamed Leroy. On November 16, 1926, while the Leroy was en route from Pensacola to Tampa and Sarasota when, she started to take on water and sink. Her crew of 15 took to a life boat and reached shore 18 hours later. The Leroy lies scattered in 118 ft of water. Her boiler is about all that is still recognizable. 29 53.358N 85.57.125W

MARINE SULPHUR QUEEN (Ft. Myers Area to the Keys)
This vessel disappeared off the west coast of Florida on 4th Feb 1963 on route to Norfolk, VA. Debris from this 524 ft tanker was recovered off Key West but no trace of the vessel or its 39 man crew have ever been found. The Marine Sulphur Queen was formerly called the Esso New Haven and was a type T2 Tanker. The production time of these vessels in 1944 was an amazing 70 days. The 17 year old tanker was purchased and converted for Liquid Sulphur Transportation. The loss of the Marine Sulphur Queen cannot be considered as unusual as 15 of her sister ships suffered the fate of breaking in half! One even did that on its mooring! Unknown Unknown

San Pablo was built in Belfast, Ireland, in 1915, and was owned by United Fruit Company. The San Pablo was torpedoed and sunk by the U-161 on July 3, 1942, while she was tied up at berth at Puerto Limon, Costa Rica. She was re-floated on January 9, 1943, and towed to Tampa for repairs. Then declared a "constructive total loss" for insurance reasons. U.S. Navy Admirable class minesweeper Strength was built in 1943 by Associated Shipbuilders in Seattle, Washington. Dimensions: 184 feet long, 33 foot beam and was 650 tons. She was decommissioned on July 19, 1946, was reclassified MSF-309 on February 7, 1955, and was struck from the Navy list on April 1, 1967. After being de-commissioned, the Strength was given to the Navy's Salvage Diver School. She was sunk as a salvage project, being re-floated and re-sunk many times. In 1987 she was sunk for the last time in an explosive test by the Navy Diving and Salvage Training Center at Panama City and began her new life as an artificial reef. TARPON - Steamer (Panama City)
Tarpon was 449 tons and as a steam passenger freighter in 1887, by Pusey & Jones Co. of Willimington, Delaware. She was formerly called Naugatuck. Dimensions:131' x 26. Powered by two compound engines and was owned by Pensacola, St. Andrews & Gulf SS Company. In September of 1891, the Naugatuck was sent back to Pussey & Jones to be lengthened by about 30 ft. Her new length was 159' 9", and her name was changed to Tarpon. In December of 1902, the Tarpon was sold to Pensacola, St Andrews & Gulf Steamship Company. On Aug 31st 1937 the Tarpon left port loaded with cargo en route from Pensacola to Panama City. Heavily overloaded she listed to port. In an effort to stabilize her list cargo on the port side was jettisoned. She was overcome by the sea and sank. Lies in 90 to 95 ft of water. 30.05.670N 85.56.550W

In 1933 she was renamed Vamar when purchased by Vamar Shipping Company. In 1941 she was transferred and sailed under a Panamanian flag. The Vamar foundered and capsized in heavy seas on March 21, 1942. Lies scattered in 25 ft and is known locally as the Lumberboat or Lumbership Wreck. 29.53.963N 85.27.900W

YORKMOOR - (In Very Deep Water 300 miles off Palm Beach)
Yorkmoor was British steam freighter of 4457 tons which was attacked by gunfire from U-506 and sunk. She was on route from St. Thomas to New York carrying a cargo of Bauxite. Lies in some 5000 metres. 29.30N
