Distribution &
Size
The fish is found both
inshore and offshore and is most abundant in the south of Florida. It can run to
40 or 50 lbs in weight but the is most commonly caught with a weight of 20 to 30
lbs.
The World & Florida Record is 56 lbs 2 oz.
General Information
Very similar in looks to the
Florida Pompano when in small size. Feeds mainly on bottom-dwelling crabs,
shrimp, small clams and small fish.
Tackle & Bait
Difficult to catch using
artificial lures. Excellent fighting fish on light tackle. Will give a good
account of itself with deep burrowing runs. If your trying to catch them from a
dock they will make for the pilings to try and avoid capture. For bait we
usually use shrimps but small crabs work well. They can also be caught spinning
and with fly tackle.
Eating Qualities
Excellent table fare. I am
told the fish should be bled immediately after capture.
