Found inshore and near
shore waters especially along sandy beaches, oysters bars and over grass beds.
Often found in turbid waters and may be found in depths of up to 130'.
Spawns offshore between March & September feeding on mollusks and crustaceans.
Seasonal movements are influenced by temperatures. The most common weights are
between 2 and 8lbs. The Florida and World record is 8lbs 1ozs.
General Information
Excellent fighting quality. Will
outrace and out pull a Jack Crevalle which is an excellent fighter.
Tackle & Bait
The lightest of spinning tackle in the surf
is the reputed method of catching this specie with 6 to 8lb line test. The best
natural bait is the sand crab but they will also take shrimps and fiddler crabs, dead
shrimp, clams and cut squid. Pompano will take artificial jigs.
