Distribution & Size The Blue Marlin is the largest of the Atlantic Dolphins and is found offshore in blue water. It is common to 11 feet and known to exceed 2000lbs. Male fish do not exceed 300lbs. Fish from about 100 to 500lbs are not rare. The Florida record is 980lbs 8ozs. The World record is 1402lbs. I have seen a few fish caught around this weight both in Mauritius and Madeira. I have also been unfortunate to loose one which we believe was well in excess of 1000lb.................that's fishing !! The White Marlin is also a blue water fish common to 8 feet in length. The White Marlin averages 40 to 70lbs and 100lbs is not uncommon. The Florida record is 161lbs and the World record is 181lbs 14ozs. We have yet to catch one in Gulf waters. General Information These species feed on pelagic fish including Blackfin Tuna, Frigate Mackerel and Squid. Blue Marlin are best known for speed, power and jumping ability. Usually found patrolling the weed lines around small schools of tuna's and other pelagic baitfish and along ocean seamounts and temperature differentials. The White Marlin is probably the most aerial of all the billfishes but with plenty of stamina as well. Tackle & Bait The standard method for catching Marlin is trolled artificial lures, live large baitfish such as Dolphins, Bonitos or rigged dead baits of the species just mentioned. However lures are the favored method as they can be trolled at greater speed and this allows boats to cover more water. Eating Qualities Food value of both fish is good, but fish are seldom taken by anglers and normally catch and release is the order of the day.
